CULTURE DAYS – FLIN FLON EVENTS

1. OPENING CEREMONIES

Description:  The Flin Flon Aboriginal Friendship Centre is kicking off CULTURE DAYS in Flin FLon with a Welcoming Ceremony for visiting artists, dignitaries and community members.  During this ceremony, spectators will enjoy the Fabulous Fiddlers from Churchill, MB,  the female Aboriginal Drumming Group from Cranberry Portage, MB,  Hoop Dancers from Creighton, SK and the McIsaac School Children’s Choir from Flin Flon, MB.  Stick around for a coffee and muffin following the ceremony.

2.  PROGRAM TITLE:  Flin Flon Station Museum Heritage Memories

VENUE: Flin Flon Station Museum

Description: The Flin Flon Station Museum is offering morning and afternoon sessions for School Age Children.  During this event kids will have the opportunity to explore the museum, enjoy storytelling, with a snack of bannock and juice.

3.  PROGRAM TITLE:  THE PROSPECTOR IN YOU

VENUE:  Creighton Museum

Description:  The Creighton Museum is offering an exciting opportunity for school age kids to explore their heritage RCMP Museum,  hear stories of how the original prospectors for the ore that made Creighton and Flin Flon such a strong economic force in an original prospector’s tent and try their hand at panning for gold.

4.  PROGRAM TITLE:  ABORIGINAL/METIS EXPLORATION

Description:  School Age children will be treated to the historical knowledge and environment of this lovely museum.  They will explore aboriginal art forms, pottery, aboriginal storytelling and more.

5.   PROGRAM TITLE:   SUPERSTAR!  - THEATRE Youth Programming

Description:  Middle Years kids grades 6 – 8  will explore theatre improv, stage lighting, theatre make-up and stage blocking.   They will share their knowledge with a brief demonstration for each other at the end of the session.

6.  PROGRAM TITLE:  SUPERSTAR! – MASK MAKING Youth Programming

Description:  Middle Years kids grade 6 – 8 will explore the art of MASK MAKING with artist Linda Sonnenberg-Jackson winner of several Northern Juried Art Shows. The Masks will be showcased at the end of the session for all SUPERSTAR! Peers.

7.  PROGRAM TITLE:  SUPERSTAR! – Hip Hop Dancing Youth Programming

Description:  Middle Years Kids  Grades 6 – 8 will explore Hip Hop Dance.  Flin Flon  Recreational Dance instructors Katie Stevens and Brandi Gray will introduce this fun dance medium to participants and all levels of dance experience.  The kids will showcase what they have learned in a short showcase with all Superstar! Peers

8.  PROGRAM TITLE:  SUPERSTAR! – FREEZE FRAME

HIGHSCHOOL PROGRAMMING

PROGRAM TITLE:  IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ARTS

Venue:  SPORTEX

Description: All activity stations are geared towards exposing High School ages  students to the visual arts.  Activities include:  1. Chalk Walk – People get on their hands and knees ( knee pads provided) and create chalk pictures to entertain everyone who walks by.  2. Tile Display – Local student artists willhave created small 25 cm square files which will be joined together to create an image. They have had no knowledge of this final product.  When they return to the SPORTEX they will find out what it is that they helped to create.  3) Manga Hand Mask – Create a new persona using Manga Styling.  Local Student Artists will demo and lend a hand with your mask.  Manga examples will be provided for use as aids to creative imaging.  The mask is attached to a handle so that you can hold it in front of your real face-showing the Fantasy-You.  4) Postcard Response-Fashion a postcard in response to a soul searching question. Eg. What is your secret or What is Beauty or How is a Refrigerator Like a Cat?  5) Graffitti Wall- What do you have to say?  Say it in big colours and bold letters. Letter style examples will be on hand.  6) Pinch Pottery with artist Elaine Angelski.

9.  PROGRAM TITLE: ABORIGINAL ART

Description:  This activity station is offered on Friday to HighSchool Students and on Saturday to the general public.  Participants will learn about aboriginal and metis art including Birchbark Biting,  Animal Tufting and more.

10.  PROGRAM TITLE:  WRITE ON INTO THE FUTURE!

Description:  This station will be available for High School Students on Friday September 24 and the General Public on Saturday September 25th in the Creighton SPORTEX.  Come see the many literary works that have been created by local authors.  Also this station will feature a SPECIAL EDITION book called BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE – Why We Love The North  made especially for CULTURE DAYS.  You’ll find poems, short stories and photos from local authors young and old.

11.  PROGRAM TITLE:   OUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY

Description:  For much of its history the Flin Flon and Creighton area has been a meeting place and a place of opportunity for many families from around the world. As a mining community we have made friends with many families as close as Cranberry Portage and as far away as South Africa.  Visitors will be able to check out the display area showcasing many of the cultures our family and friends have come from.

12.  PROGRAM TITLE:  The Art of QUILT MAKING

Venue: Creighton SPORTEX

Organizing Committee: Northstar Quilt Guild

Description:  Creating a family heirloom such as a hand-made quilt is a wonderful way to celebrate a special occasion such as graduation, wedding or birth.  Learn the basic skills and try to tools of the trade with the help of experienced local quiltmakers as they piece together baby quilts that will be donated to the community.

13.  PROGRAM TITLE:  SNAP SHOT!

Description:  Photography has exploded as an art form.  Members of the Flin Flon and Creighton Photography Club will be on hand with camera’s at the ready to show you tricks of the trade.  Work with a green screen and create some magic!  This station will be available for High School Students on Friday September 24th and for the General Public on Saturday September 25th

14.  PROGRAM TITLE:  THE HEART OF ART! – The FLin Flon Arts Council

Friday September 24th  MY WORD! Featuring theatre companies from Flin Flon- Ham Sandwich and Theatre 53 from The Pas as well as our favourite CBC storyteller VINCENT MURPHY will be in from Regina for the show.

Saturday September 25th  WITH A SONG IN MY HEART,  celebrating MUSIC with The fabulous Flin Flon Community Choir, Chamber choirs Aurora from The Pas and Borealis from Flin Flon,  Celtic Group CROOKED JACK from The Pas, Flin Flon’s very own Susan and Brent Lethbridge and Thompson treasure- Baroque Soprano Luz Alvarez.

Sunday September 26th  FASHIONISTA!  For the first time ever Flin Flon will showcase Fashion Art in this Couture Fashion Show featuring designers PATRICIA GLANVILLE – Edmonton Fashion Show,  LAURIE BROWN – Young Toronto Student of Design and  LEONI KABOLE- Kenyan Designer now living in FLin FLon

16.  PROGRAM TITLE: CULTURE DAYS ART EXHIBIT

Description:  We’ve pulled out all of the stops!.. or paint brushes.  Over 15 demonstrating artists will be on sight for you talk to about the Visual Arts and our committee is organizing an amazing sampling of local artwork for you to enjoy.  Also come meet our special guests!  Guest Artists – Olympic Village participants Irvin Head and Thompson’s Jasyn Lucas will be on site as well as guest Master Artist MARCEL DEBREUIL.  Here’s your chance to ask the question…”How did you get started?”.  Get a few tips.  Half of the SPORTEX will be a fabulous art show that you won’t want to miss!  Many of our northern artists are award winning recipients of the Northern Juried Art Show.  The next NJAS is happening in Flin FLon in May 2011, need some information?  This is the time to get it!

17.  LA GALA CAFÉ    FRIDAY & SATURDAY PERFORMANCES – FREE!

Description: This FREE Performance Event is where you’ll want to end up each evening.  The LaGala Café is an outdoor venue that will feature live acoustic music from Northern artists while you  relax with a glass of wine, beer or a simple cup of coffee and enjoy some hors d’oeurves with family and friends.  At the LaGALA CAFÉ you’ll hear everything from Pop classics,  Jazz, Celtic, Country, Metis and even a touch of Medieval Consort for those of you that really want to chill.  Talking about Chilling, no need to worry about the temperature if we happen to have a cool weekend.  The La GALA CAFÉ will be heated.  You’ll just have to sit back and relax while the Knights treat you like royalty.  So after the MAIN STAGE CONCERTS head next door to the LaGALA CAFÉ for something to drink and A FUN EVENING OF MUSIC!
