NEEPAWA HOSTS MANITOBA DAY 2010 CELEBRATIONS
- - -
New Immigrants to Take Citizenship Oath
Neepawa is the place to be May 12 as the western Manitoba community hosts Manitoba Day 2010 birthday celebrations as well as the annual citizenship court ceremony for new immigrants, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Flor Marcelino, minister responsible for multiculturalism, announced today.
"I am excited to be participating in Manitoba Day celebrations in Neepawa," said Marcelino. "For the first time in the province's history, the Government of Manitoba will host a citizenship court ceremony outside of Winnipeg. I am looking forward to welcoming all those people who have decided to make Canada and Manitoba their new home."
Celebrating Manitoba's diversity past, present and future will be the focus of the 2010 spring citizenship court event where 31 new Canadian citizens representing 14 countries will be welcomed to the province.
Marcelino noted Manitoba Day is the province's birthday and a day to welcome new immigrants to the province and celebrate the province's heritage. She encouraged all Manitobans to celebrate Manitoba Day by attending the many events being held in communities throughout the province.
On May 12, 1870, the Manitoba Act, which created the Province of Manitoba, was given royal assent. On May 12, 1966, Manitoba's official flag was dedicated and unfurled for the first time. And, in 1986, May 12 was designated as Manitoba Day in recognition of the importance of this day in the history of the province.
"Manitoba Homecoming has announced that tickets are now on sale for the World's Largest Social. Set for Saturday, May 15th/10." See Homecoming Website for more information. "All socials are fundraising endeavours for local initiatives in each community.Currently 59 communities from across the province are coming together to take part in this true Manitoba tradition."
